As the song goes, “come out, come out, wherever you are”. Coming out videos are sources of inspiration and illumination for people on the verge of or have plans revealing their sexuality. More often than not, the issue of coming out begins to be thought about when gay people have to venture into something that involves public revelation, like entering in a same sex relationship or engaging in a career or practice highly associated with queerness. Whatever the reason is, the decision to come out is very difficult in as much there’s severe anxiousness thinking how family, relatives, friends, people from school, work, and community will react to such revelation.

Coming out videos, precisely because of their audiovisual nature, are the most powerful sources of encouragement in sexual disclosure. In the past few years, there have been a dozen of television shows and special documentaries around the world that featured gay coming out stories. These works, broadcast in national and global scale, have been able to propagate awareness on homosexuality to the greater heterosexual population, making them better understand, more so accept, the nature of people who prefer the same sex.

Nonetheless coming out videos are more for gay people than straight. The stories they depict, whether through confessional or dramatization, remind fellow gay people that they are not alone, and the problems, fears, and frustrations that they face regarding their sexuality are in fact not uncommon. They positively point out the sooner or later, accidentally or deliberately, one will reveal himself or herself to families and friends, and the act of revelation actually does not always result to rejection or anger or disapproval of people. As many coming out videos divulge, there are parents and friends who right away show their support and acceptance to their gay loved ones upon the confession, and while there are sad cases in which tears flowed out and hurting words expelled, in the end, reconciliation still took place and love emerged triumphant.
