January is a challenging time for many, with post-Christmas blues, short days, and financial stress weighing heavily. For elderly people and their families, these feelings can be exacerbated by limited mobility, isolation, and winter weather hazards. Blue Monday, known as the most depressing day of the year, falls on the 20th January this year.
Lilian Faithfull Care, a not-for-profit charity providing care for the elderly, wants to highlight the mental health challenges faced by older people during the winter months. To combat the challenges, Lilian Faithfull Care is sharing practical tips and heartwarming activities to foster meaningful connections, boost mental well-being, and bring joy to elderly loved ones and their families.
Practical tips to brighten winter days
- Intergenerational bonding: Share stories, bake traditional recipes, or create simple crafts together. These activities are a joy for all ages.
- Low-cost ideas: Attend community events, explore library resources, or take gentle nature walks (weather permitting).
- Stay safe at home: Ensure pathways are salted, homes are clutter-free, and footwear is sturdy.
- Indoor entertainment: Enjoy chair yoga, board games, or virtual tours of world-class museums from the comfort of home.
Activity suggestions
Knitting or crocheting: These crafts keep hands busy and create a sense of accomplishment, whether making scarves, blankets, or small gifts. There are various charities that accept knitted goods, which again can give a sense of accomplishment to the maker.
Puzzles: Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, or Sudoku keep the mind sharp and provide a sense of achievement. You can even get personalised puzzles, with your very own photo!
Chair yoga: Gentle exercises improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and boost mood. There are various different videos you can follow, here is an example.
Indoor gardening: If normally an avid gardener during warmer months, caring for houseplants or starting a windowsill herb garden could provide that sense of purpose and connection to nature during the winter.
Virtual museum tours: Many museums offer free online tours, here is an example from The National Gallery. This means you can view art from the comfort of your own home!
Adult day care: Attending adult day care means you can make some new friends in your local community, take part in exciting group activities and enjoy freshly prepared food.
The reality of elderly mental health
A UK survey revealed that 75% of people aged 65+ have experienced significant anxiety or low mood since turning 65, with around 10% feeling this way frequently or all the time. These figures underscore the importance of proactive efforts to combat isolation and support the elderly during winter’s challenges.
Lilian Faithfull Care urges everyone to check in on the mental health of elderly loved ones this winter. Whether through a heartfelt phone call, a shared activity, or simply spending time together, these gestures can make a world of difference.
If you are concerned about the mental health of an older person, resources such as Age UK and Mind offer valuable support and guidance.
Kevin Snowball, CEO at Lilian Faithfull Care commented:
“Winter can feel like a long and lonely season for many older people, but it doesn’t have to be. By fostering connection and engaging in meaningful activities, we can bring light and warmth into their lives, especially on days like Blue Monday. Together, let’s make this winter a time of care, community, and connection.”
